Parson Rob

In memory of Robinson Bracewell, farmer and local preacher and head of a large well-known local family, of Upper Stonehead, Cowling, who died 1.12.1939 age 70,  buried at Cowling Hill along with his wife Alice (formerly of Kettlewell) who died 11.6.1930 age 62 years.

PARSON ROB

1.  Parson Rob has gone to sleep -
No need for anyone to weep.
Has had near shaves of going to jail,
With bills and writs in every mail.
Has had his troubles like many more -
    Now he's knocking at heaven's door -
If he enters it's nothing to us!

2.  Women were just a sideline with him -
He tried to please with every whim -
With riding on buses and drinking beer -
No wonder his parish thought him queer?
His will was small, there was little behind.
There was his shirt hung out on the line -
His suit went to Winston's marine store -
A sackful of rags not fit to be worn!

3.  His stick was left to his son Jack -
Just like him a little bit cracked.
His boots (down at heel) have gone to Bill -
He thinks he'll be able to wear them still!
Jimmie just took his hat for a lark -
He thinks he can wear it after dark!.
He left his watch, which was always stopped  -
To Bedlam, the guy who called him Pop!

4.  To Herbert at Stubbin he left his socks -
To help him on when he's on the rocks.
To his daughters he left the old oak chest -
t the old oak chest -
Full of books and truthfulness -
To Robin he's left a very kind thought   - -
The father who always gave him nought.
And this all of Parson Rob -

WHO SPENT ON HIMSELF THE VERY LAST BOB!

written  by his grandson Mr. Herbert Bracewell
(printed  with kind permission of his  family)
