Daniel Binns
1896 - 1964

Dan Binns
was born in Cowling. Following a formal art education he trained as a
teacher and taught all his working life in Skipton, North Yorkshire. Most of
his own creative time was spent walking, sketching and painting in his
beloved Yorkshire Dales.
His watercolours were mostly painted on location seldom requiring little
work to complete on returning home. Many sketchbooks were filled over the
years with his delightful and purposeful drawings which were drawn in
pencil, ink or watercolour. Obviously done with enjoyment and love, and with
the intention of later using these for exhibition watercolours.
He regularly exhibited at both provincial and major London galleries
including The Royal Academy and The Royal Institute of Painters in
Watercolour, and in Scotland at The Glasgow Institute and The Royal Scottish
Academy.
He served as President of the Craven Art Club and regularly exhibited with
the club at their annual shows.
Dan Binns reached a wider audience designing the front cover for the
Yorkshire Dalesman (later the Dalesman) for many years, besides contributing
many illustrations and watercolours.
The few paintings on display below are mainly work from the 1940's and 50's
on scenes from the village of Cowling, provided by his son David Binns an
artist in his own right with an Art Gallery Shop - 'Brent Gallery' situated
in Daniel's home village of Cowling.
